Description
In attention to the chronicles of the Viceroyalty, the cult and faith of the people of Otuzco towards the Virgen de la Puerta began in the 17th century , when some piracy attack towards the city of Trujillo was feared , for which it would be possible that the towns nearby were also harassed by pirates.
When the news became known that the northern cities of Guayaquil and Zaña had been assaulted by buccaneers and it was believed that Trujillo would be the next city to be attacked, messages were sent from Trujillo to the nearby towns so that they could take their defensive measures.
There was a hermitage in Otuzco dedicated to the Virgen de la Concepción , patron saint of Otuzco at the time . The villagers placed this image at the entrance gate of the town as a protection against pirate attacks . Miraculously, Trujillo was not attacked by pirates and since then the cult and faith and affection towards the Virgen de la Puerta was born, which extends throughout the north of the country.
