Description
Anacaona was an indigenous Taíno queen, known for her wisdom, bravery, and leadership on the island of Hispaniola (now the Dominican Republic and Haiti) during the period leading up to and during the early years of Spanish colonization. Born into a noble Taíno family, Anacaona was noted for her ability to lead her people with diplomacy and skill. She was a key figure in the resistance against the abuses of the Spanish empire, although her struggle ended with her capture and execution in 1503. Her legacy as a symbol of resistance and indigenous female strength endures to this day, and her figure is an important cultural and historical reference in the Caribbean.
