    Agnes of Rome ( 291 – 304 ) was a Roman virgin who suffered martyrdom during the Diocletian persecution . Her life is told in the Proceedings . She was locked up in a brothel, where according to legend her sainthood was confirmed. She is revered as one of the great martyrs in the history of the Church, and her feast day is celebrated on January 21 .
